茅草屋是吉里巴斯最常見的房屋，小型的只能容納一個人睡，大型的可以讓兩三個成人睡一間，他們稱之為『Kia kia』。

Kia kia屋頂的材料來自有「生命之樹」之稱的林投樹的葉子，骨架是用木頭藉由卡榫組合，沒有牆壁的Kia kia，夜晚的海風能直接吹進屋子。
